Szczawnica — a spa town between the Grajcarek and the Pieniny
Szczawnica is more than a stop after Dunajec rafting. The spa town follows the Grajcarek stream, with its historic centre higher up around Dietl Square. Mineral springs and Józef Szalay’s 19th-century work shaped its development: he built spa guesthouses, improved the resort and promoted treatments in the Pieniny. His legacy remains in the square, villas, drinking hall and parks. Explore two sides of Szczawnica — the contemporary promenade and the older spa quarter climbing towards Dietl Square — to understand its own character beyond its role as a gateway to walking trails.
An easy start beside the Grajcarek
The broad streamside promenade is a gentle introduction. Walk beside the water, watch the Pieniny slopes and stop without aiming for a set distance. It suits families, older visitors or a recovery day after hiking. You can start near the lower Palenica chairlift station and head towards the Grajcarek’s meeting with the Dunajec. Beyond, the Pieniny Way continues towards Červený Kláštor, but there is no need to walk it all. The promenade alone offers room for coffee, rest and getting to know the town, leaving energy for the uphill spa quarter later.
Dietl Square and the old spa
Head uphill for a different face of Szczawnica. Buildings around the intimate square recall its spa history, with the mineral-water drinking hall at its heart. This is a good place to explain why the town became famous. Its naturally carbonated mineral waters are known as szczawy, the source of the town’s name. Do not hurry from building to building. Enjoy the square and Upper Park, noticing how architecture and greenery created restful surroundings for earlier spa visitors.
Palenica: views and a more active option
In stable weather, consider Palenica. The chairlift starts near the centre and takes you above the town for Pieniny views. It is optional: low cloud can hide the panorama, and a valley walk may be more comfortable in wind. Prepared walkers can start a longer route from the top, but should choose it around conditions and the group’s ability. Families may be happy with a short visit to the ridge, time to look around and a chairlift down. Confirm operation directly with the operator.
Combining Szczawnica with Dunajec rafting
Szczawnica is a natural finish to a popular rafting route, but combining them takes planning. After landing, eat and rest before choosing a short promenade walk. Adding Dietl Square, Palenica and a long Pieniny Way walk can leave every place feeling rushed. Let rafting lead the day and Szczawnica provide a gentle ending. If the spa and its history are your main interest, come separately, with time for the park, spa quarter and coffee instead of watching the clock for return transport.
Planning your day out from Silverton
Leave Silverton after breakfast, having checked weather and road delays. Park legally in Szczawnica and continue on foot. Start along the Grajcarek, then climb towards Dietl Square and Upper Park, with a regional lunch or dessert on the way. In clear weather you could spend the afternoon on Palenica; in rain, stay around the spa quarter and shorten the route. Set off back before evening traffic builds. If dinner is included in your Silverton package, use its time to work out a realistic departure from Szczawnica.
With children, older relatives or uncertain weather
Szczawnica’s strength is that a shorter visit still feels worthwhile. With small children, stay near the promenade, playground and stream. Older visitors can pair a gentle walk with the spa quarter while avoiding steeper sections. Pushchairs suit level promenade stretches, though the climb to Dietl Square takes more effort. During showers, pause in a café or drinking hall and skip Palenica if necessary. After heavy rain, be cautious near rivers and streams. Current local and operator notices matter more than an itinerary written days earlier.
A different kind of day before returning to Silverton
Szczawnica balances a Białka holiday with spa architecture, the Pieniny, Dunajec and a gentler promenade rhythm. Back at Silverton, rest, sort your photographs and decide whether tomorrow means the Tatras, Lake Czorsztyn or staying close to the guesthouse. Use Silverton as a settled base for days with different characters, rather than a reason to collect as many stops as possible. Szczawnica rewards time spent noticing water, old villa details and park views without constantly checking your watch.

Is this a good way to finish a rafting trip?
It can be, provided it fits your confirmed return transport. A walk is a useful extra only if it does not interfere with reaching your car. Arrange the return first, then decide how long to stay in Szczawnica.
