Hrebienok combines an easy ride from Starý Smokovec with a genuine mountain walk. Studený potok waterfalls, Rainerova chata and seasonal winter attractions let you choose a day that suits your group without climbing a high summit.
A mountain crossroads above Starý Smokovec
Hrebienok is one of the Slovak Tatras’ best-known destinations. Above Starý Smokovec, it links routes of very different kinds. Stay near the upper station for a short walk or continue towards huts and waterfalls, but distinguish these options: easy transport up does not turn every onward trail into a promenade. Its flexibility is the appeal. Families can choose a small section, while fitter walkers plan a longer circuit around current conditions. It also reveals the transition from a developed resort to mountain surroundings.
The funicular and the resort’s history
The journey from Starý Smokovec is part of the experience. Dating back to 1908, the funicular reflects the town’s growth as a holiday and walking resort. Infrastructure changed access to terrain that previously required a longer climb, opening it to visitors seeking gentler days. Today the ride saves energy for walking above. Choose a ticket to match your return: descending on foot is a separate effort, not a surprise to spring on the group. Check operation, maintenance and the final service. Smokovec’s buildings can provide a short architectural walk before or after the ride.
Studený potok waterfalls from the marked route
Streams around Hrebienok form cascades and rocky steps. Their character changes with water levels and seasons, from a powerful flow to smaller channels over smoothed rock. Uneven approaches are not simply extensions of the station platform. Take particular care beside water and wet stone, keeping children close. Do not leave accessible areas for a better photograph. After heavy rain or in ice, skip this branch. The rest of Hrebienok can still make a worthwhile visit, leaving the stream for another date.
Rainerova chata and the beginnings of mountain tourism
The small stone hut offers a different scale from modern resort buildings. Its origins go back to Ján Juraj Rainer in the 1860s, when shelter served a practical need for walkers. It also recalls mountain porters who supply higher huts. Pause over the displayed objects and consider the work behind every delivery. Do not assume accommodation or a full lunch from the word “hut”: the official description presents a small refreshment point and exhibition, without standard overnight accommodation. Confirm opening and availability before your trip.
Reading the landscape through the educational trail
Educational information around Hrebienok introduces valleys, granite, woodland and mountain streams. It explains processes visible around you: glaciation, water erosion and changes at the treeline. Instead of walking only between named sights, choose a few stops and compare their explanations with the surroundings. Children can look for water’s effects or differences between rock and vegetation. Check the complete route and current access on a map. Some waterfall approaches are unsuitable for pushchairs, even though easier access exists to certain nearby places.
A separate plan for winter
Winter may bring an ice temple, sculptures and sledging. These are seasonal activities with announced dates and operating conditions; check the current winter’s programme. Last season’s photograph does not promise the same theme or display. A sledging route also needs confirmed opening, rules and suitable equipment; any snowy road is not an alternative. Snow and ice change walking difficulty too. Bring warm layers and footwear suited to reported conditions. Without appropriate preparation, staying around the station may be wiser than taking further branches.
An outing from Silverton
Before driving to Starý Smokovec, check the forecast, funicular and intended trail. A basic plan is the ride up, a walk towards Rainerova chata in suitable conditions, then the return service. Add waterfalls deliberately, allowing for uneven access. Back in Smokovec, have a meal and see a little of the resort before returning to Białka. There is no need to add another cable car at Tatranská Lomnica. Explore another part of the Slovak Tatras on a separate day, giving Hrebienok time for its own story of water, woodland and walking history.
A suggested day plan
- Check funicular operation, weather and access for your chosen walk.
- Drive to Starý Smokovec, ride up and choose Rainerova chata or a shorter option.
- Add waterfalls if conditions suit, then return for your planned descent and meal.

Continue on foot after arrival
Reach Hrebienok from Starý Smokovec by funicular or on foot. From there, plan the walk to Rainerova chata or the waterfalls and back. Check the last service if using the funicular.
Allow time for the return journey
Allow for driving both ways, the full visit or trail, food and delays. Walking includes the return to the car. Match the outing to weather, daylight and the group’s abilities.
This trip takes you outside Poland. Bring your travel documents and check the weather, road conditions and the operator’s latest updates. Check journey times in your navigation app on the day.

Before you set off
Does the funicular ticket include every Hrebienok attraction?
No. It provides transport upwards, while individual attractions and seasonal services may have separate arrangements. Check inclusions, return time and current operator notices. If descending on foot, make sure everyone can manage the extra distance and surface conditions. A transport ticket does not determine a suitable walking itinerary.
Can a pushchair reach the waterfalls too?
Do not confuse easier access to Rainerova chata with every waterfall approach. The official guide identifies a more manageable red-marked path to the hut, while terrain around the cascades is harder. Choose according to your pushchair and current surfaces; confirm any particular needs. If uncertain, finish at an accessible point.
Is the ice temple open all year?
No. It is a winter attraction with dates, a theme and arrangements announced for each edition. Check the operator’s current programme, funicular status and other winter activities rather than relying on old photographs. Hrebienok remains a walking starting point outside that season, subject to conditions.
