A panorama revealed as you leave the trees
Rusinowa’s appeal begins with the contrast between the woodland approach and the sudden open view. Ridges and rocky summits of the Belianske and High Tatras spread before you. Clear air makes their shapes easier to compare, but you need not know every name to appreciate the scale. Bring a panorama map or binoculars and take time to look. Weather transforms the scene from sharply defined ridges to peaks briefly appearing between clouds. The clearing is a destination in its own right: going higher is not essential to an enjoyable Tatra outing.
Shepherds’ huts and the meadow’s history
Rusinowa is more than a viewpoint. Timber huts and open pasture recall traditional Tatra grazing: tending animals, making cheese and living around seasons and weather. Seen this way, the huts become working history rather than photographic decoration. Seasonal conservation grazing keeps part of the tradition alive, but do not assume animals or sales will be present on every date. Keep your distance, avoid interrupting shepherds without invitation and follow signs. Children can learn the difference between a meadow maintained by people and natural vegetation above the treeline.
Wierch Poroniec: a clear starting point
The green-marked route from Wierch Poroniec is a popular approach. It leads through woodland without high-mountain technical difficulties, but roots, stones, mud and ice still call for good footwear and care. Allow realistic time for parking and walking, particularly on busy days. Returning the same way is simplest: your car waits at the start and the descent is familiar. Finishing elsewhere, such as Zazadnia or Palenica Białczańska, requires transport arranged beforehand. Similar map names do not mean the car parks are close together.
Wiktorówki: a timber chapel and mountain memorial
A marked path descends from the clearing to the Wiktorówki sanctuary. The timber chapel is associated with devotion to Our Lady of Jaworzyna. Describe the apparition to a shepherd girl as local religious tradition, rather than an indisputably documented event. Memorial plaques honour people connected with the mountains, bringing a quieter mood after the open panorama. You need not attend a service to respect this place of remembrance. Be discreet during ceremonies and photograph the interior only when the rules and circumstances allow it.
Gęsia Szyja: a wider view and a greater effort
The green trail continues to Gęsia Szyja. Its steps and steeper sections demand noticeably more stamina than the approach from Wierch Poroniec, especially on the return. The rocky summit offers a broader perspective, but needs care and is not a play area for children. Add the ascent, descent and breaks rather than judging from a flat map. Wet timber, snow and ice can make conditions much harder. If the clearing has been enough exercise, keep it as your goal. Resting with a panorama is as worthwhile as reaching another summit.
Practical choices for different groups
For a first family visit, walk from Wierch Poroniec to Rusinowa and return after a generous break. Enjoy the huts, views and changing light. Another option includes Wiktorówki, remembering that descending to the chapel also means climbing back if you return to the same car park. Reserve Gęsia Szyja for a group accustomed to longer walks. Do not automatically combine every branch. In summer, bring water and sun protection; in cooler seasons, layers and current condition checks matter. The woodland walk can still be pleasant in poor visibility, but a ticket cannot guarantee the panorama.
A mountain outing with Silverton as your base
You need not move your accommodation to Zakopane to visit Rusinowa. Choose a promising forecast, pack a bag and reach your agreed starting point. At the clearing, leave time for your own picnic and the views: the pause is often the day’s highlight. Afterwards, eat locally or return to Silverton according to your package meals. If a longer Tatra hike is planned tomorrow, there is no need to add every available path today. Rest makes it easier to build a holiday from outings with different levels of effort.
A suggested day plan
- Check weather and park notices; choose Wierch Poroniec as your start and return point.
- Follow the green trail to Rusinowa and pause for the panorama and pastoral setting.
- Add Wiktorówki or Gęsia Szyja only after assessing time, conditions and everyone’s energy.

Before you set off
Do we need to climb Gęsia Szyja to see the mountains?
No. Rusinowa Polana is valued for its broad panorama and can be your complete destination. Gęsia Szyja adds a more tiring ascent and a rocky summit requiring care. With small children or anyone returning to exercise, a rest on the clearing and the familiar route back can be the better choice.
Can we return directly from Wiktorówki to the car?
That depends where you parked. From Wierch Poroniec, the simplest return climbs back to the clearing and follows the familiar trail. Descending to Zazadnia ends elsewhere and needs transport arranged in advance. Do not choose a different finish merely because a sign gives a short descent time.

What are the plaques beside the chapel?
They commemorate people connected with the mountains, including rescuers and those who died on mountain outings. Pause to read some of the stories, keeping the quiet appropriate to a sanctuary. The Dominican community caring for Wiktorówki publishes information about the memorial and individual plaques, along with current sanctuary news.
