More than one image of the Pieniny’s crown

From the river, Trzy Korony forms a recognisable rocky silhouette. Up close it is a massif, not a single pinnacle. The highest point, Okrąglica at 982 metres, holds the viewing platform. Height alone does not describe the effort: you begin much lower and face a real ascent. The changing perspective from valley to summit is the appeal. Give it a day from Silverton rather than a hurried addition to rafting or several castle visits.

Starting in Sromowce Niżne

This approach gradually leaves village buildings for mountain scenery. Near the beginning, check whether the Pieniny National Park’s education pavilion is open. It introduces more than rocks and panoramas, including smaller organisms tied to particular habitats. Trzy Korony mountain hut is another landmark. Park legally and note how to return. Arrival in the village is not arrival at the summit: the walking day begins here, needing suitable footwear, water and energy.

Wąwóz Szopczański: look beside the trail too

The yellow route leads through Wąwóz Szopczański towards Szopka pass. Limestone shapes and changing views give the approach its own interest. Notice rock texture, trail-edge plants and the contrast between open valley and forest shade rather than thinking only of the platform. Stay on the marked route for photographs. This may be children’s most engaging observational section, even while adults focus on the top. Stop without blocking others. Short, frequent pauses keep the ascent an outing rather than a speed test.

Szopka pass and the next stage

At Szopka, also known as Chwała Bogu, take the blue route towards Trzy Korony. Compare signs with your map rather than following another group. Reassess weather and energy here; feeling unwell or an approaching storm is reason to change the aim. Do not tell children it is almost finished if you do not know the remaining route. Include platform queues and the descent in the plan. Seasonal crowds affect the final section, so use more than the most optimistic return estimate.

Okrąglica and the view above the Dunajec

Prepared infrastructure leads to the platform; check the park’s current access and charging rules. From above, the valley, villages and ridges become clear, with the Tatras visible in good air. Look first without a camera, then take a few photographs without obstructing others. Compare the Dunajec with the morning view from Sromowce to understand the landscape’s scale. If heights trouble you, the final platform is optional. The rest of the walk still has value without pushing beyond your comfort for a photograph.

Plan the descent as carefully as the ascent

Return the familiar way or use a checked circuit through Kosarzyska if open. Read its full length, route and climbs rather than choosing an interesting name at a junction. The park describes a Sromowce circuit, but your pace and conditions need a margin. Wet-stone descents can tire knees more than climbing. Keep water and eat before reaching the car. In uncertain weather, avoid extending towards further summits. The final valley section remains part of the outing, not a detail to omit.

A mountain day from Silverton

Check the Pieniny forecast and park notices before leaving. Navigate to Sromowce Niżne and save the walking route separately. Allow parking, preparation and possible Okrąglica queues. After descending, eat or rest beside the Dunajec rather than heading straight to another attraction. Červený Kláštor can be enjoyed on a separate gentler day. One clear aim, an attentively walked route and an unhurried evening make a satisfying Silverton holiday rhythm. Tomorrow can bring a lighter walk, baths or culture.

A suggested day plan

  1. Check weather, park notices and platform access; prepare the walk and drive from Silverton.
  2. Climb through Wąwóz Szopczański and Szopka pass, reassessing conditions and energy.
  3. Return by your deliberately chosen route to Sromowce and rest before the drive.

Allow time for the return journey

Set aside a full day for this trip and make it your main outing rather than adding several distant attractions. Allow for the drive both ways, the full visit or trail, a meal and spare time. The walking stage includes the return to the car park. Adapt it to the weather, daylight and your group’s abilities.

Before you set off

Is Trzy Korony a short stroll?

It should not be described that way. Even the popular Sromowce option involves climbing, natural surfaces and a descent. Add breaks and possible platform waiting to map times. Assess the whole group’s fitness, not only summit height. Turning back with fatigue or worsening weather is a sensible part of a plan.

Is there a charge for the viewing platform?

Pieniny National Park publishes access rules and the charging season. Check for your date rather than relying on a price from an earlier holiday. Platform admission is separate from parking and the approach. Busy periods can also involve waiting.

Should we combine the hike with rafting?

Only with carefully arranged logistics; it is not a combination we recommend automatically. The walk and raft trip have different start and finish points, while weather, queues and tiredness can disrupt tight timing. During a multi-day Silverton stay, separating them usually leaves each the time it deserves.
